The Messenger

Sometimes you need something to pass some time and a true movie buff that I think I am loves to spend it watching whatever movie I can lay my hands on. This was one of those movies. Even though I had read rave reviews, I was, for some unknown reason, avoiding watching it for quite a while. I was surely missing out on a gem.

The Messenger tells the story of a Iraq war hero(Ben Foster) assigned duty of Casualty Notification Officer, under Captain Stone(Woody Harrelson) wherein if a soldier dies in conflict he's suppose to be the first one to inform his/her immediate family members. The story on the outside doesn't promise much, but when you see it being enacted on screen, you can actually feel the pain;Pain the CNO undergoes, while breaking the news but more importantly the pain a family undergoes upon hearing the news of loosing their dear ones in the war. The director captures these heart wrenching moments beautifully. It also involves a budding romance between Foster and Samantha Morton(widow of a fallen officer) and the dilemma both face.

The beautifully woven storyline is aptly supported by superlative performances from all the 3 lead actors. Specially Woody Harrelson with his portrayal of a mountain stone officer deserves special mention. He was rightfully nominated for an Oscar.

My sister-in-law thought it was pretty depressing, but then when was a war fought without such moments. A must watch in every sense.
